Headless Hitchhiker
I am a student at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA. I am engaged to a girl who
lives just south of Macon, about 2 hours south of Atlanta on I-75, and I
drive home every weekend to see her.
At the end of last year (my third at GT), I left Macon about 9 p.m. on a
Sunday evening, my usual time, and drove North on I-75. A few miles
outside of Macon I saw something that I wonder about to this day.
The evening was cool, but comfortable and dark, but not terribly foggy or
anything. What I saw was a man wearing dark slacks and a pale blue, long
sleeved, button-up-type shirt walking down the breakdown lane. He was
headed north, so I passed him with his back toward me. The odd thing is I
don't think he had a head. My first impulse on this recollection is that
he was dark haired, making his head difficult to see, but even then I
would have glimpsed an ear or the side of his face as I passed, and I
distinctly remember seeing nothing above a very visible collar.
My second thought was perhaps it was a very dark complected person, but I
remember his hands being very pale. I have driven that same stretch
through all weather for four years now. I am very familiar with the area,
as well as how things look in headlights and on the roads at night in
general, but I have no explanation for what I saw.
The figure was walking calmly northward and did not so much as break
stride as I passed, but I saw no car broken down for miles, and he was too
well dressed to be a hitchhiker. Strangely, the sight caused me no stress
or even amazement. I simply thought, "Interesting. No head," and kept
driving.
